Free place and map tools: coordinates, local time, your sky

Type a city and these tools take it from there. The place is resolved against a copy of the GeoNames gazetteer, which gives its coordinates, its country and its time zone in one gesture, and each tool then answers its own question for that exact spot. A city rather than a country, because one country can hold several zones and several hours of longitude. Nothing you type is kept.

Which tool answers which question

• What are the coordinates of this city? The latitude and longitude finder gives them in decimal, DMS and DDM, with the country and time zone to tell the Springfields apart, plus reverse lookup, distance, bearing and CSV lists.
• What time is it there right now? The local time tool gives the zone, the offset, daylight saving and the machine forms of the instant, and converts a moment between two cities.
• What does the Moon do over my city this month? The moon phase calendar answers night by night, rise and set included.
• Which nights is the Milky Way visible from here? The Milky Way nights calendar keeps the nights that are dark, moonless and with the core high enough.
• Which side of the train gets the sun? The which side to sit tool reads the Sun along the way between two cities, and says which window your landmark is behind.

What a place resolves to

A latitude, a longitude and an IANA time zone identifier such as Europe/Paris, which is the only unambiguous way to state a local time. The gazetteer holds populated places above a size threshold; for a village, pick the nearest town, and the answers change by seconds.
