Data & credits
Whose data the tools compute on, under which licence, and what is ours: GeoNames places, JPL ephemerides through Orekit, Font Awesome icons, open fonts.
The tools on this site compute their answers on the server from data that other people gathered and shared. This page says whose, under which licence, and what is ours.
Places
Every box that asks for a city, a station, a mountain or a monument resolves it against a copy of the GeoNames geographical database held on our own server: names, coordinates, time zones, elevations. GeoNames is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. We ship two extracts: the populated places of more than five thousand inhabitants, and the reliefs and landmarks that carry a Wikipedia link. Nothing you type is sent to GeoNames; the lookup is local.
The sky
Sun, Moon and planet positions are computed with the Orekit space dynamics library (Apache License 2.0), on the JPL DE440 planetary ephemerides published by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with the Earth orientation parameters of the IERS and the space-weather series of CelesTrak. Time zones and their rules come from the IANA time zone database.
Icons and type
Icons are Font Awesome Free (icons under CC BY 4.0, fonts under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, code under the MIT License). The text is set in Nunito and Baloo 2, both under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
Pictures
The mascot, the card backdrops and the tool illustrations are ours. They were made once with our own image tool and shipped with the site; no picture is generated when you use a tool.
Code
The site runs on the arcate platform. The computations happen on the server; the pages carry no analytics script and no tracker of ours — see the privacy policy.
